Former Union Minister and Senior Congress leader Dr. Girija Vyas passed away. She breathed her last at around 7:15 pm on Thursday at Zydus Hospital in Ahmedabad.
She was burnt by a fire from earthern pot which caught her Chunni during the Gangaur Puja a month ago. Her condition worsened with 90 per cent burns.
Girija Vyas' brother Gopal Sharma said that earlier her health was improving, but her condition had deteriorated again after two days.
Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary and Spokesperson Pankaj Kumar Sharma said- Dr. Girija Vyas's mortal remains will be brought to Udaipur till late at night.
“The mortal remains will be kept at her Detya Magri residence for the last darshan from 10 am to 12 pm on Friday,” he said.
Fire took place at her home
Dr. Girija Vyas was worshipping Gangaur at her residence in Detyamagri in Udaipur on March 31. Her chuni caught fire, which spread to result in 90% burn. A person working at home took care of them. She was taken to a private hospital in Udaipur. From there he was referred to Ahmedabad.
Girija was born in Nathdwara
Born in Nathdwara in Rajsamand district, Girija's father was a freedom fighter. Mother was a teacher. She came to Udaipur and did undergraduation and postgraduate studies from Udaipur University (currently Mohanlal Sukhadia University). She later graduated from Delhi University. She also worked as a professor in the philosophy department of Sukhadiya University, Udaipur before plunging into politics.
Political career
In 1985, as a candidate of the Congress , she was elected as MLA from Udaipur, Rajasthan and served as a Minister in Rajasthan government in 1990.
In 1991, she was elected to the Indian Parliament, representing Udaipur in the Lok Sabha and was appointed a Deputy Minister (Information and Broadcasting) in the union ministry in the Narsimha Rao government.
