Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice MM Srivastava had a narrow escape from falling victim to digital arrest.
During the hearing, CJ Srivastava made a verbal comment, “I too could have been a victim of digital arrest. I also got a call once. I immediately gave my mobile to the registrar. It was the registrar who discharged the call.”
The Chief Justice made the remarks on Monday during a hearing in a case related to digital arrest and the rise in cybercrime-related offences.
The High Court in January had taken a suo motto cognisance of the rising cases of digital arrest.
On Monday, a division bench of CJ MM Srivastava and Justice Manish Sharma was hearing the matter.
Reply sought from the Centre and the state government
The High Court had sought responses from the Centre and the state government in this matter as to what the governments are doing to stop this fraud.
The governments have so far not submitted their response. The court asked the government to submit its reply.
The court had observed that innocent people are not only losing hard earned money but also their lives in some cases during in digital arrest.
The court said that general public needs to be protected from these crimes and firm action needs to be taken against them.
The court said that the state government has taken some steps to curb these offences, but still there is a need to take concrete action to prevent them.
Told RBI to develop system
The court also directed the Reserve Bank of India to take serious steps in the matter. The court had said that the RBI and the government's grievance redressal committee also need to develop a system to protect the common man from fraud received on the portal or website or mobile number, so that the money of the innocent can be saved.
