IPS Lakhbir Singh, who is serving as SSP Vigilance Amritsar, has been suspended following alleged irregularities in tenders related to development works in the posh Ranjit Avenue area, involving misappropriation of crores of rupees.
According to sources, action was taken following a complaint lodged by an IAS officer. However, SSP Lakhbir Singh was unaware of the reason behind his suspension.
“I have not yet received any official orders, so I cannot comment further,” he said.
Lakhbir Singh was posted as SSP Vigilance in March this year. The important thing is that it was Lakhbir Singh who headed the team that arrested Bikram Majithia on 25 June 2025. Within about nine months, he has been suspended on charges of corruption. Earlier, 2 months ago, SSP Maninder Singh of Amritsar Rural was also suspended.
Probable reason behind his suspension
According to sources, there has been no development work in the Rs 55 crore tender in Ranjit Avenue, a posh area of Amritsar. Instead crores of rupees said to have been distributed among influential people.
According to police sources, a case has also been registered against a social worker in this regard.
It is believed that the work related to sewerage and street light was to be done at a cost of crores. Role of a social worker is suspected in awarding the contract to contractor, who paid bribe to officials involved.
A complaint was also sent to the DGP on behalf of a social service organisation.
