IPS Mahesh Dixit named next IB chief

Mahesh Dixit, a 1993 batch IPS officer from Andhra Pradesh ,  has been as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). 

Dixit, who currently serves as Special Director in IB, will succeed incumbent IB Director Tapan Deka, who was appointed in June 2022. Deka subsequently received two one-year extensions, in June 2024 and June 2025. 

This comes at a time of evolving internal security challenges and marks the officer's leadership of India's premier domestic intelligence agency.

Dixit to leverage his extensive experience in Intelligence operation 

Dixit's extensive experience in intelligence operations and internal security includes leading the IB's Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Srinagar. This bureau has jurisdiction over Jammu, Kashmir and Leh. Officials have said he played a pivotal role in maintaining internal stability and tracking regional security threats after the abrogation of .

Dixit is renowned for his robust ground-level intelligence network and expertise in counter-terror operations. He has successfully managed several sensitive assignments within the Intelligence Bureau, including those related to Left-Wing Extremism and cross-border infiltration.

His extensive field experience in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to shape the agency's approach to tackling Pakistan-sponsored , radicalisation and narco-terror networks as he takes over the country's top domestic intelligence post.
