Rajasthan clocks record GST collection, impressive show despite GST 2.0

Rajasthan registered record GST collection this year clocking a growth of 10% over last year beating country's overall growth of 8.3%.

In the last month itself, the state recorded growth of 16.2% over last year's collection, ending the fiscal year on a sound note.

The state collected GST of Rs 46,200 in this fiscal as against Rs 42,000 last year. In March 2026, the monthly collection was 4,608 crore as against last year's collection of Rs 3,964 crore in the corresponding month.

The country's Gross GST revenues rose to 22 lakh crore rupees in the financial year -26, an 8.3 per cent increase over 20 lakh crore rupees recorded last year.

The impressive performance of state is despite reduction in GST rates on majority of items effective from September 22, 2025.

“We could have easily crossed Rs 50,000 crore mark this year had GST 2.0 not happened. The reduction in GST slab resulted in less collection,” said a senior finance department official.

Who is responsible for the magical performance?

There was no full fledged Commissioner Commercial Tax in this fiscal since Prakash Rajpurohit went on in the first week of April 2025. Kumar Pal Gautam, who is serving as Finance (Revenue) was given additional charge of Commissioner Commercial Tax for almost complete fiscal.

The swell in GST earnings happened after Gautam tightened noose on GST theft and focused on recoveries.

“Gautam is a silent performer. He has a good knack of revenue and handled the department well,” said a senior IAS officer who has worked with Gautam.

What does the hike in GST mean?

The rise in GST collection indicate increased business activities in the state. Major contributors in hike in GST collections include automobiles, real estate, construction, companies and mining sector.

“Rajasthan is progressing well. Record earnings show that the state is attracting investment also. Rise in automobile sales show the increase in spending capacity of people while growth in real estate also indicate higher disposable income,” said Rameshwar Singh, an economist.
