Jaipur’s Mohnish Grover becomes world’s first surgeon to perform AIM guided Cochlear Implant in ANSD patient

Dr Mohnish Grover, who has done the highest number of Cochlear implants, could not find a better occasion than National Training Programme on Cochlear Implant to perform an implant using Active Insertion Monitoring (AIM) Technology for the first time in the world to a kid suffering from Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder – a rare condition where the inner ear detects sound normally but the auditory nerve fails to transmit it to brain.

During the program, a total of six complex cochlear implant surgeries were performed – all free of cost under the Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya (MAA) Scheme.

Grover teamed up with Dr Raghav Mehta and other senior doctors of RUHS to change the fortune of a kid suffering from ANSD.

To execute the surgery with perfection, a specialised team of expert audiologists from visited and shared these results with their professional counterparts in the USA.

Why AIM technology is superior?

Dr Mohnish Grover, who is the youngest of All Rhinology Society, said that the AIM technology ensures an extremely slow, controlled, and atraumatic electrode insertion, minimising inner ear trauma.

“Normally, electrode insertion during cochlear implant surgery takes approximately 30–60 seconds as against  AIM-guided insertion, which takes 410 seconds, ensuring maximum protection of delicate cochlear structures,” he said.

Grover said that AIM technology is superior as the intraoperative cochlear responses are exceptionally strong, reaching levels of 100–170 as against  typical responses which are in the range of 30–60.

Team behind the success?

The surgical team included Dr. Mohnish Grover, Dr. Sunil Samdani, Dr. Raghav Mehta, Dr. Shashank Nath Singh, Dr. Ashima Saxena, Dr. Ambika, Dr. Mahendra, Dr. Suman, Dr. Mahima, and Dr. Rita.

The anaesthesia team comprised Dr. Varun Saini, Dr. Satveer, Dr. Manish, Dr. Sameer, Dr. Pratibha, and Dr. , whose contributions were invaluable.

Apart from that ENT surgeons from Punjab and Haryana also participated in the live training programme.

RUHS to become major centre for Cochlear Implant

Looking at the success Cochlear implants at RUHS, Principal Dr. Vinod Joshi the number of operation theatres in the ENT department has been increased from 4 to 6 to curtail waiting list which has currently extended up to April 2026,

RUHS Medical Superintendent Dr. Anil Gupta announced that a dedicated cochlear implant operation theatre will be established at RUHS, specially designed for advanced surgery. This will significantly enhance surgical quality, safety, and volume.
