Former Director General of Doordarshan and senior civil servant K Satish Nambudiripad has been appointed as the as the Chairperson of the Centre for Creative Economy and Public Policy (CCEPP).
The CCEPP has been established by National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut to give a fillip to innovation and collaborative initiatives in the emerging areas of Creative Economy.
Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut, said that a Centre for Creative Economy is one of the first of its kind being established anywhere in an institution of higher learning in the Country.
“The new Centre shall focus on emerging areas of creative and Orange Economy and facilitate appropriate policy and institutional interventions as well as capacity building and consultancy. It would also serve as an interdisciplinary platform to promote education, research, policy engagement, and advocacy in allied domains,” he said.
Who is K Satish Nambudiripad?
K. Satish Nambudiripad is an officer from the 1991 batch officer of the Indian Information Service.
Nambudiripad during his 35 year long career, had also held positions such as Additional Director General, Prasar Bharati Corporation, Private Secretary to Union Minister for Food & Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Director (Secondary Education) and Registrar of Copyrights India in the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development during 2006-2009, OSD (Broadcasting) in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Deputy Press Secretary to the President of India, late Dr. K.R. Narayanan during 1998-2002. As the first Chief Executive Officer of the NORKA Department (Non-Resident Keralites' Affairs) in his home State of Kerala during 2002-2005, he is credited with setting up of NORKA-ROOTs, the implementing agency of the Department and devising and executing various welfare schemes and projects for the non-resident Keralites.
A Post Graduate in English language and literature, Nambudiripad also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in English journalism from IIMC, Delhi, as well as Masters Programme in Public Policy from ISB, Hyderabad/Mohali. He has also been trained in various aspects of public policy, scheme implementation, communication governance, performance management and public-private partnership initiatives etc from institutes like IIPA Delhi, IIM Bangalore, LBSNAA, Mussoorie, University of East Anglia, UK and University of California, Berkeley.
What centre will do?
The Centre shall develop and offer courses, electives, executive education, capacity-building, and continuing education programmes in public policy, the creative economy, and allied areas, and facilitate the development of future academic programmes, including Master's and Doctoral research programmes.
Centre will study jobs opportunities in growing cities
Setting up such an academic platform has come at a time when the creative industries have emerged as a significant driver of economic growth worldwide. As highlighted in an IBM study, creativity ranks as the single most important skill for leaders, with 97% of employers emphasising its growing importance. The creative economy encompasses a wide array of sectors, including music, visual arts, architecture, software development, and more. The creative economy constitutes roughly 6.1% of the world's gross domestic product (GDP), with national GDPs typically ranging from 2% to 7%. UN estimates indicate that the creative industries generate annual revenues exceeding $2 trillion and support nearly 50 million jobs globally.
As cities grow, creative industries are increasingly integrated into local development strategies, reflecting a growing recognition of the significance of creativity and innovation for economic growth, job creation, and social cohesion. With the announcement of Kozhikode as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature and Thrissur and Nilambur as Learning Cities in the state of Kerala, and with the recognition of a wide network of UNESCO creative cities in India, the NIT Centre is expected to serve as an academic hub for fostering collaboration, knowledge dissemination and policy initiation in the areas of urban development.
