Cyber scammer targets Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murthy, FIR filed

Rajya Sabha MP, former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and author Sudha Murthy filed a case with the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police after an unknown person tried to extract sensitive information from her.

According to the FIR, Murthy received the call at around 9.40 am on September 5. “The caller introduced himself as an employee of the Ministry of Telecommunications and alleged that her number was registered without linking it with Aadhaar,” the FIR read.

Using the ruse, the scammer also tried to extract personal information of the MP. During his call, he allegedly told Murthy that the phone number was being used to transmit and access obscene videos. Apart from it, he claimed that the services to her number would be stopped at 12 noon and misbehaved with her.

When she checked the number from which she received the call from on True Caller, it displayed “ Dept”, according to the FIR.

Following the incident, one Ganapathy Bopaiah filed a complaint on Murthy's behalf, based on which the FIR was registered under 66C (Identity ), 66D ( by impersonation) and 84C (attempt to commit offences) of the Information Technology Act.

Murthy was nominated as Rajya Sabha MP in March 2024.
