Senior IPS officer M.A. Saleem will take over as the new Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) of Karnataka.
The 1993-batch IPS officer from Karnataka, who is heading the Criminal Investigation Department, Special Units and Economic Offences, Bengaluru, succeeds DGP Alok Mohan who retired on Wednesday. Saleem will hold concurrent charge as the state DGP and is likely to hold this post for one year as he is due for retirement in June 2026.
Saleem has served in various capacities across the state—from Superintendent of Police in districts like Udupi and Hassan to IGP (Eastern Range), Commissioner of Police in Mysore city, and Special Commissioner of Police in Bengaluru. He has also headed the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Crime and Administration wings of Karnataka State Police and served as the chief of CID.
A decorated officer, Saleem bagged the President's Police Medal for distinguished services in 2017, the President's Police Medal for Meritorious Services in 2009, the National Award for e-Governance for exemplary usage of ICT by the Government of India, and a commendation disk by the Bureau of Police Research and Development, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India in 2021. He was conferred with the IRTE Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for immense contribution to promote road safety.
Saleem has pioneered traffic management, introducing numerous innovative practices to enhance road safety and efficiency. His efforts have led to the implementation of one-way systems on 122 roads in Bengaluru, Safe Routes to School, Automated Traffic Challan System, Local Area Traffic Management Plans and citizen participation projects like ‘Public Eye' for traffic rule enforcement.
