Property dispute of Udaipur royal family intensifies, reaches apex court

The property dispute in the former royal family of has now reached the Supreme Court. The dispute is between former royal member Arvind Singh Mewar's son Lakshya Raj Singh Mewar and his daughter Padmaja Kumari Parmar. 

Arvind Singh Mewar's will has been challenged in the Supreme Court. Mewar died on March 16, 2025.

There is a dispute between the two siblings over the rights of other property, including City Palace and HRH Hotels Group.  

The matter will be heard in the Delhi High Court on January 11. Lakshyaraj Singh is the heir to the Mewar family and the owner of the HRH Group of Hotels. 

Lakshyaraj and his sister file separate petitions

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Mukul Rohatgi said that the petitioner is from the family of Arvind Singh Mewar, a former member of the royal family of Udaipur, who was the successor of Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar. There is a dispute among family members over the succession and the validity of the will.

Arvind Singh Mewar's son Lakshya Raj Singh Mewar has demanded that the cases pending in the Mumbai High Court be transferred to the Rajasthan High Court. The second petitioner has requested that the cases pending with the Jodhpur Bench Rajasthan High Court be sent to the Bombay High Court.

The Supreme Court has directed of all cases pending between them to the Delhi High Court. The court has directed  both the parties to approach Delhi High Court for any dispute between them. 

The history of dispute

Bhagwat Singh Mewar had 3 Mahendra Singh, Arvind Singh and daughter Yogeshwari Kumari. Bhagwat Singh Mewar had decided to sell and lease the family properties in 1983. His elder son Mahendra Singh did not like this decision. He had gone to court against his father. After this, Bhagwat Singh Mewar, angry with the elder son, handed over the of his will and property-related judgements to his younger son Arvind Singh Mewar.

After this, Mahendra Singh Mewar was almost excluded from the trust and property. After the death of Bhagwat Singh on 3 November 1984, the property dispute of the former royal family of Mewar deepened. After 37 years of legal battle, in 2020, the district court of Udaipur had ordered the division of the disputed property into 4 parts while pronouncing a . In this, one part was ordered in the name of Bhagwat Singh Mewar and the other three parts were ordered to be divided among his three children.

Most of the property remained in the possession of Arvind Singh Mewar till the court's decision, while Mahendra Singh Mewar and his sister Yogeshwari Kumari got a limited share. The court had immediately put an immediate stay on economic activities related to properties such as Shambhu Niwas Palace Badi Pal and Ghas Ghar.
