Putting end to speculations, Rajeev Krishna has been appointed as the new acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh. There was possibility of incumbent Prashant Kumar to get extension as he is considered close to the chief minister Yogi Aditya Nath. However the government decided to go with Krishna, who is also close to the chief minister.
Krishna will be the fifth acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh since May 11, 2022 when DGP Mukul Goyal was suddenly removed from the post.
Krishna, a 1991 batch IPS officer is currently serving as DG Vigilance and Chairman of Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment & Promotion Board. He is hailed for conducting free and fair police selection as chairman of PR&P Board.
Who is Rajeev Krishna?
A native of Noida, Rajeev Krishna has four years of service left with him. He will retire in June 2029. His wife, Meenakshi Singh is an IRS officer and Income Tax Commissioner in Lucknow.
His brother-in-law, Rajeshwar Singh is a former ED officer and current MLA from Sarojininagar, while Lakshmi Singh the Police Commissioner of Gautam Buddha Nagar is his sister-in-law. His father-in-law also served as DIG in Uttar Pradesh police.
Rajeev Krishna will be fifth acting DGP
In last three, Uttar Pradesh has got five director general of police. On May 11, 2022 full time DGP Mukul Goyal was suddenly removed and then DG intelligence DS Chauhan was made acting DGP. Chauhan retired on March 31, 2023. DG Police Recruitment Board RK Vishwakarma was made acting DGP after the retirement of DS Chauhan.
Later Vijay Kumar was made acting DGP on May 30, 2023 after retirement of RK Vishwakarma, who was replaced by Prashant Kumar on January 31, 2024.
Krishna pips 11 officers to gain the top post
Rajeev Krishna was at 12th place in terms of seniority. The senior post IPS Safi Ahsan Rizvi, a 1989 batch officer is on central deputation as DG National Disaster Management Authority. Other senior officers like Daljeet Singh Chawdhary (1990 batch) is serving as DG BSF, Alok Sharma (1991 batch) is serving as DG, Special Protection Group and Piyush Anand (1991 batch) is serving as DG National Disaster Response Force.
Among those in home cadre senior to Rajeev Krishna, Ashish Gupta (1989 batch) is posted as DG Rules & Manual, Sandeep Salunke (1990 batch) is serving as DG Human Rights Commission, Renuka Mishra (1990) is attached to DGP headquarters, Monmohan Kumar Bansal (1990) is serving as DG Power Corporations and Tilotama Verma (1990) is serving as training Headquarters.
Two officers senior to Krishna – PV Ramasastry and Sanjay M Tarade – retired along with Prashant Kumar. Aditya Mishra (1989) will retire next month while Bijaya Kumar Maurya will retire in July this year.
