Senior IPS officer and Tamil Nadu Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) H.M. Jayaram has been placed under suspension by the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday a day after he was secured by police in connection with his involvement in abduction of a minor boy in Tiruvallur district. He was picked up by the police following an order of the Madras High Court.
The suspension order was issued by the Home Department of the Tamil Nadu government. He was picked up by Tiruvallur district police personnel when he came out of the High Court premises on Monday. He is facing the charge of abetting a gang by providing his official car to abduct the teen boy to separate a couple.
The senior officer was taken in a police vehicle to Thiruvalangadu police station and was interrogated by the investigation officer for about six hours. After his statement was recorded, police took him to the office of Tiruthani Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). Mr. Jayaram is likely to be produced before a judicial magistrate court in Tiruthani.
On Tuesday, Mr. Jayaram moved the Supreme Court seeking stay of the order issued by the Madras High Court.
Supreme Court agreed to urgently hear on June 18 a petition filed by Tamil Nadu Additional Director General of Police H.M. Jayaram challenging his arrest in an abduction case.
What is the case?
The case relates to the alleged abduction of a boy, aged over 16, from Kalambakkam near Thiruvalangadu on May 10.
The allegation is linked to the boy's elder brother, who had met a girl on social media, married and eloped with her.
The girl's family had come in search of her, found the younger brother and took him away. He was later dropped off at a nearby location by them. The allegation is that Mr. Jayaram lent his official vehicle to the girl's family.
The case is listed before a Vacation Bench headed by Justice Ujjal Bhuyan on Wednesday.
