Rajeev Kumar Sharma, a 1990 batch IPS officer will be taking over as director general of police (DGP) in the evening. He has been repatriated to home cadre from centre where he was serving as director general, bureau of police research and development.
Sharma was natural choice as he is currently the senior most IPS officer in the list. With this appointment the gets a fixed tenure of two years irrespective of his superannuating age. He will now retire on July 3, 2027 while his normal superannuation was scheduled on March 31, 2026.
Rajeev Kumar Sharma has an illustrations career of 35 years in which he has served on various key positions – both in centre as well as in Rajasthan cadre. He has spent considerable time in state's Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Central Bureau of Investigation among other postings.

He played two innings in CBI. In first innings (2000-2004), he had served as SP CBI in Jaipur and New Delhi before getting promoted as Assistant IG in CBI.
In the second innings (2010-2015), he served as DIG CBI before serving in Special Task Force (STF) of CBI as joint director.
In ACB also, he had three stints. During his two stints in ACB, Sharma served as Inspector General ACB before serving as Director General ACB.
Apart from that, Sharma also has international exposure. From March 1996 to April 1997, Sharma was on deputation to Bosnia, Herzegovina where United Nations was trying to bring peace. He had also studied in Germany and Holland yo enrich his academics. He is armed with Master of Arts degree followed by Master of Philosophy.
A recipient of Police medal and President Police medal, Sharma is considered an expert in crime busting and police administration. Having spent considerable time in CBI, his expertise lies in investigation.
