Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot’s daughter-in-law accuses family of harassment, dowry demand

In a set back to Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, his grandson's wife Diya Gehlot has accused grandson Devendra Gehlot and other family members including his (Thawar Chand Gehlot) wife Anita Gehlot of domestic violence, dowry and attempt to murder. 

In a complaint submitted to Ratlam SP Amit Kumar, Divya alleged that she was brutally beaten, pushed off from 

terrace, and threatened with death by her husband and in-laws. Divya's sasural is in Nagda while her parents reside in Ratlam, where compliant was registered. 

In the complaint, Divya has accused her husband Devendra Gehlot, father-in-law Jitendra Gehlot (former from Alote), brother-in-law Vishal Gehlot, and grandmother-in-law Anita Gehlot of demanding dowry of Rs 50 , subjecting her to physical and mental torture, and forcibly keeping Divya's daughter away from her. 

Son of Thawar Chand Gehlot and former MLA Jitendra Gehlot refuted allegations while saying,“Anyone can make allegations. I will speak to the media with all the facts.”

Divya accuses husband of addiction and illicit affairs

Divya got married to Devendra on April 29, 2018. She alleged that many facts about her husband were concealed before marriage. 

“I was not aware that discovered my husband was addicted to alcohol and other substances. It's not all he also had illicit relationships with other women,” she claimed.

Describing about her torture at in-law's place, she complained Th at she as being regularly harassed for not brining the promised dowry with her.  

“They taunted me, saying my father had promised to give Rs 50 lakh. I was mentally and physically tortured and even denied food several times,” she alleged.

Husband pushed her down from the terrace

The mental and physical harassment didn't end there. She alleged that on the night of January 26, 2025, her husband brutally assaulted her in an intoxicated and pushed her off the terrace. She fell into the gallery area, sustaining serious injuries to her spine, waist, and shoulder. She alleged that even after such serious injuries she as not taken to the hospital that night. The next day, she was admitted to Bombay Hospital in Indore. She also claimed her in-laws pressured her father to bear the treatment expenses before sending her back to her parental home.

Daughter being held hostage 

Divya alleged that her four-year-old daughter is being forcibly kept at her in-laws' home. When she went to meet her daughter at school in November, her husband allegedly instructed staff not to allow the . They said that she (Divya) could meet her daughters not after bringing Rs 50 lakh  from parents.
