Hiieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). He will assume office on June 30.
Lt General Seth, is currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS) after assuming the office April this year. He will replace army chief General Upendra Dwivedi when he retires on June 30.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy Khadakwasla, Lt General Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. His nearly four-decade career has encompassed extensive experience across operational, strategic, capability development and institutional domains.
The government statement outlined his command assignments, including an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, an Armoured Brigade in the Western Theatre and a Counter Insurgency Force in Jammu & Kashmir.
The next COAS has previously commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the army's premier strike formations; served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area; and commanded South Western Command and Southern Command.
Lt General Seth holds a rare distinction of commanding both operational Army Commands – South Western Command and Southern Command – and providing strategic oversight across critical theatres for over two and a half years.
