Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has been given a one-year extension on Wednesday. Previously, he had been granted a 19-month extension beyond his superannuation date of November 30, 2024. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved this extension, which is now for a period of one year beyond July 14, 2026, effectively extending his tenure until July 14, 2027.
Misri was appointed Foreign Secretary in June 2024. A 1989-batch IFS officer, he previously served as Deputy National Security Adviser (Dy NSA) before his appointment. He succeeded Vinay Mohan Kwatra, who is now India's ambassador to the United States.
Born in Srinagar in 1964, Misri received his early education in Gwalior. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Delhi University's Hindu College and an MBA from XLRI.
Misri has held various positions at the Ministry of External Affairs and served in Indian Missions abroad in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. He has also worked as the Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office and as Private Secretary to three Indian Prime Ministers: IK Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.
He has served as private secretary to three prime ministers: Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi. He also served as India's ambassador to Spain (2014-2016) and Myanmar (2016-2018), in addition to numerous other Indian missions, including Pakistan, the US, Germany, Belgium and Sri Lanka.
