Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among 241 reported to be killed so far in the London-bound Air India plane that crashed near the Ahmedabad airport soon after take-off on Thursday (June 12, 2025).
Union Minister C.R. Patil confirmed the death of the former CM.
As many as 230 passengers and 12 crew members were aboard on the Air India flight which crashed soon after the take off. Among e passengers 169 were Indians, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese, and one Canadian passenger.
Tata Group to give Rs 1 crore to kin
Tata Group has announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of each person who lost their life in the Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad.
“We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment,” said Tata Sons Chairperson N Chandrasekaran on X.
The company will also bear all medical expenses of those injured and assist in rebuilding the B J Medical College hostel that was hit in the crash.
The injured passengers have been taken to local hospitals. A special team of caregivers from Air India will be reaching to Ahmedabad to take care of injured.

Special arrangement for DNA sample collection
The state government has made special arrangement for DNA sample collection to identify those who lost their lives in the plane crash.
“Close relatives, such as parents or children, of the deceased will be able to give DNA samples at Kasoti Bhavan of BJ Medical College of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital,” state health department principal secretary Dhananjay Dwivedi said.
