Former IAS Ashok Sampatram falls victim to erratic traffic in Jaipur, survives road accident

A day after the Harmada ‘massacre' where a trailer driver murdered 14 people in Jaipur, a Roadways bus hit upon a Fortuner in which former IAS Ashok Sampatram, his wife and driver Kuldeep were travelling.

The accident took place at the intersection of Ganesh temple on main JLN road. The collision was so severe that the bonnet of the car was damaged.

Though Sampatram and his wife had a close shave, the incident again raised a big question mark on the traffic management and alertness of cops in the capital.

The former IAS's wife alleged that traffic police in Jaipur was ignorant of rules violation even after the deadly incident at Harmada, which cost 14 lives when a trailer conceded serial deaths on road.

What happened?

Former IAS Ashok Sampatram was admitted to Santoba Hospital. His wife Simrat Kaur was taking Sampat Ram home from the hospital. During that time, three buses of Punjab Roadways were on the road. A bus suddenly hit the car while pressing it off the side.

“Two buses with Punjab number went ahead breaking the signal when the red light was on. The third bus too tried to jump the red light. During that the bus hit our car,” said Simrat Kaur.

She alleged that Constable Kanwar Singh, who was posted there, instead of taking any action  tried to persuade the Sampat Ram family. The bus driver, after hitting the car, also tried to escape from ten post. But wife of Sampatram stopped him and pulled out the keys.

Kaur informed higher officials of traffic police. But the police took more than half an hour to reach there.

“I am shocked. Even after the deadly incident of Harmada, police is not serious. The chief minister has directed police to take strict action against any traffic violation to curb such incidents. But police don't seem to give heed to his orders,” she said.

Who is Ashok Sampatram & Simrat Kaur?

Ashok Sampatram is a 1979 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan batch. He retired from service in 2015 from the post of additional chief secretary. He is son of Sampatram who was home minister of Rajastham from 1977-1980 in the first Non Congress . His brother Jaswant Sampatram was an IPS officer in Rajasthan cadre. He retired as DG.

Sampatram's wife Simrat Kaur is a politician. She contested assembly from Kishangarh Bas – the seat of father-in-law Sampatram- on BSP ticket in 2023 elections.
