IAS Subodh Agarwal asks, why can’t state commissions match UPSC standards

Senior most IAS officers of Rajasthan cadre – Subodh Agarwal – hailed the 99 years old unblemished legacy of Union Public Service Commission while posing a pertinent question about the standards of public service commission.

He puts onus on the that be to resurrect the losing sheen of state public service commission.

“Isn't it the shared responsibility of all levels of governance to nurture meritocracy?” asks Agarwal in a post uploaded on site LinkedIn

For quite some time, Rajasthan Public Service Commission has been under attack for paper leak and deep rooted corruption in election procedure. So much so that one of its members Babu Lal Katara was arrested in paper leak case.

Agarwal, the 1988 batch IAS officer, applauded UPSC as the silent custodian of meritocracy in India's thriving democracy.

“Recently, while interviewing a candidate at the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the Chairperson of our board asked a profound question:

“How come India has such a thriving democracy, while surrounded by nations where democracy struggles to survive?”

The candidate's reply struck a deep chord:

“There are many reasons, but one of them is the way UPSC has conducted itself over the years,” Agarwal wrote in his post.

Hailing the transparent selection  process of UPSC, Agarwal wrote that he is here as an IAS officers only for UPSC's rigorous and impartial selection process. He is currently serving as chairman and managing director of Rajasthan Financial Corporation.

“Over decades, regardless of political winds or shifts, UPSC has consistently ensured that merit — not privilege — finds its place in public service,” he wrote.
