In an interesting development, a Rajasthan cadre IAS officer Rajeev Singh Thakur is likely become the next Chief Secretary of Manipur after the central government approved his inter-cadre deputation.
He will replace Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel, a 1991 batch AGMUT IAS officer, who is set to retire on August 31, 2026.
Thakur, a 1995 batch IAS officer is in central deputation serving as Advisor Niti Aayog in the rank of Secretary. His ongoing central deputation, who was extended till December 3, 2026, has been after curtailed following approval from Appointment Committee of Cabinet.
According to the approval, Thakur's inter-cadre deputation will continue until June 30, 2029, the date of his superannuation. The extension has been approved as a relaxation of the existing deputation policy.
Thakur's likely appointment as Chief Secretary of Manipur has come at a time when the state is recovering from the impact of ethnic conflict.
