A local initiative launched in Rajasthan's Salumbar district for water conservation and groundwater monitoring is poised to make its mark on the global stage.
The “MyWell App,” which digitises community-based water monitoring in the district, will have its global launch on September 18 at the University of Sydney, Australia.
Salumbar district has been given the opportunity to represent Rajasthan at this international event.
Experts and representatives from various locations—including Salumbar, Mumbai, Delhi, Australia, and Botswana—will join the programme online, where insights from this initiative, which blends water conservation, groundwater management, community participation, and digital technology, will be shared with international experts.
Data to travel from village wells to global stage
Until now, water levels in village wells were measured locally. The MyWell App will integrate this entire process into a digital platform. Local communities and field personnel will be able to measure well water levels regularly and record the data via mobile phones.
These periodic data entries will make it easier to understand fluctuations in groundwater levels. Analyzing this data will help assess the status of water resources and facilitate better decision-making for future water conservation plans.
In essence, changes in well water levels will no longer remain confined to village knowledge; they will be preserved as digital data.
Community participation meets technology
The MyWell App's significance extends beyond mere digital recording; the initiative actively involves the local community alongside technology. Increased villager participation in monitoring water resources ensures they receive regular updates on local water levels and the changes occurring within them.
