In a significant development, the Centre has revised the posting of IAS Himanshu Gupta (AGMUT cadre, 2012 batch). Instead of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the former CBSE Secretary has now been assigned to Ladakh.
The fresh order comes less than two weeks after the Ministry of Home Affairs had posted him to the island territory following his premature repatriation from central deputation.
The sequence of events began on June 2 when the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) ordered Gupta's premature return to his parent AGMUT cadre. Shortly thereafter, the Ministry of Home Affairs posted him to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. However, the Centre has since modified the order and shifted him to Ladakh, one of the country's most strategically important regions.
Himanshu Gupta, an IIT Delhi graduate, joined the IAS in 2012. Over the years, he has held several important assignments in Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh and the Central Government.
Who is Himanshu Gupta?
Himanshu Gupta's wider recognition came after taking over as Secretary of CBSE in November 2023.
He oversaw the implementation of several NEP 2020 initiatives while handling matters related to examinations and academic reforms. In September 2025, he was also appointed Secretary of NCERT, where he supervised initiatives related to digital education, curriculum reforms and technology integration.
Before moving to central assignments, Gupta served in several positions in Delhi. He worked as Director of Education and previously held the positions of Deputy Commissioner in the Municipal Corporation and SDM, Najafgarh. He also managed challenging assignments in Arunachal Pradesh. As Deputy Commissioner of Longding district, he worked on improving connectivity and strengthening governance in the insurgency-affected region.
He later served in the Chief Minister's Office and Planning Department. His latest posting to Ladakh marks another chapter in the career of an officer who has served across education, urban governance and remote district administration. With its strategic importance and challenging terrain, Ladakh is expected to test his administrative experience once again.
