Former CEC M S Gill passes away, cremation today

Former Chief Manohar Singh Gill passed away at a south Delhi hospital on Sunday after a short illness. He was 86 years old. Gill will be cremated in Delhi today.

Gill had previously served as a bureaucrat under Parkash Singh Badal when Badal was the of Punjab. From December 1996 to June 2001, he held the position of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Gill, along with GVG Krishnamurty, became a member of the Election Commission during TN Seshan's tenure, transforming it into a multi-member body.

Gill was the first former CEC to enter , becoming a Congress member in the Rajya Sabha and serving as the Union Sports Minister in 2008. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his condolences for Gill's passing and commended his significant contributions to the nation's .

Amarinder Singh, former Punjab Chief Minister, also expressed his sorrow at Gill's demise.
“Saddened to hear about the passing away of former CEC and Union Minister Dr Manohar Singh Gill. My heartfelt condolences are with his family and I pray to Waheguru ji to grant eternal peace to the departed soul,” he said in a post on X.
