The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has accepted the resignation of Divya Mittal, a 2013-batch IAS officer of the UP cadre.
Mittal had announced to voluntarily resign from the administrative service on August 30, citing personal reasons, family priorities, and new life goals. Her resignation will be effective from September 15, 2026.
Following the resignation, the Uttar Pradesh government had forwarded the matter to the central government. Now DoPT has issued notification regarding acceptance of her resignation.
Divya announced her resignation via her Facebook and X accounts. Though she had not ascertained reasons behind her sudden move. Propel are speculating that she had decided to resign following not-so-good treatment by the state government.
Why Mittal resigned?
In May 2026, she had been removed from the post of District Magistrate (DM) of Deoria and posted as a Special Secretary in the Revenue Department—a role considered to be of relatively lesser significance.
She was said to be uncomfortable in the position ever since. There is much speculation surrounding her, including talk that she might contest the Assembly elections from Mirzapur, where she had spat with the Mirzapur MP Anupriya Patel, who was allegedly not invited for Jal Pujan ceremony.
Mittal While serving as the District Magistrate (DM) of Mirzapur, Mittal made it her mission to bring piped water under the Jal Jeevan Mission to Lahuria Dah, a remote hilltop village that had not seen tap water since India's independence.
Just two days after the ceremony, the Uttar Pradesh government abruptly transferred Mittal out of Mirzapur.
Resignation of IAS Kannan Gopinath still not accepted after 7 years
While resignation of Mittal has been accepted within 15 days, resignation of 2012 batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre Kannan Gopinath has not been accepted even after 7 years. He has already joined Congress in October 2025.
Gopinath had quit service in 2019 2019 after publicly questioning the Centre's actions in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370.
Gopinath seeks to enter electoral politics but he cannot contest election until his resignation is officially accepted.
