Senior IPS officer Gyanender Singh Malik, who was serving as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, has been appointed as the Director General and Inspector General of Police, Gujarat State.
He succeeds KLN Rao, who had been holding additional charge since January 1, 2026. Rao will continue as Director General of CID Crime and Jails.
Malik's appointment will also lead to the selection of a new Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, a post he held before his elevation.
G. S. Malik is a 1993 batch IPS officer and with his assumption of charge, Gujarat got a permanent DGP after a long wait of nearly five months.
Meanwhile, K. L. N. Rao will continue his services as DG of CID Crime and Jail Department. From January 1, 2006 till now, L. N Rao was serving as the Acting DGP of Gujarat. G. S. Malik is the second Ahmedabad Police Commissioner in recent years to be made DGP. Prior to this, Ashish Bhatia had become the DGP.
Gyanender Singh Malik, a 1993 batch IPS officer, hails from Faridabad in Haryana. Malik, who studied engineering from BHU and LLB from Gujarat University, is among the most experienced officers of the Gujarat Police.
He has held important responsibilities in SP in six districts, IGs of four ranges, CID Crime, CID Intelligence, ACB, Home Department and BSF and CISF in the Centre.
During his tenure as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, campaigns such as major encroachment removal campaign of Chandola Lake area, action against illegal Bangladeshis and expansion of CCTV network across the city were in discussion.
Who will be the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner?
After Malik's appointment, Ahmedabad is expected to get a new police commissioner soon. According to sources, some names are being seen as prominent contenders among senior IPS officers.
Among them, the name of 1996 batch IPS officer Rajkumar Pandya is considered the strongest. He is currently working as DGP (Law and Order) in Gujarat, Gandhinagar. He also has the additional charge of Executive Director and ADGP (SC/ST, Human Rights & Social Justice) of GUVNL.
